Reconstruction of a Neuron Using Confocal Microscopy

An LGNd neuron (from a mammalian lateral geniculate nucleus) was imaged using confocal microscopy. This type of microscopy provides high resolution optical sectioning, which is preferable to physical sectioning since the structure of interests remains intact with the confocal approach. In the series above, eighty sections at 0.7 micron intervals were stored. Images A, B, and C are representative sections from the top, middle, and bottom of the series. Image D is a composite of all sections and was created by computing average intensity at each pixel position.

The VoxelViewTM representation of this LGNd neuron is typical of programs that extract a surface from the image volume.
